‎Bou Said: Lebanon Needs a New National Discourse That Transcends Accusations of Treason and Blind Loyalties

‎Haissam Bou Said, Director and Editor-in-Chief of the International Human Rights News Agency (INHR), believes that political discourse in Lebanon remains captive to the logic of accusations of treason and alignments based on approaches that have proven incapable of building a just and capable state over the years.

‎He explained that the Lebanese people lived for decades under the influence of slogans presented as inviolable national principles, and that anyone who deviated from this framework was labeled an enemy or a traitor, in clear contradiction to the historical and political concepts that were promoted.

‎He added that subsequent events showed that many of those at the forefront of the political scene amassed wealth and influence, while the Lebanese citizen continued to bear the brunt of successive crises, with increasing poverty rates and a widening social gap, at a time when some leaders continued to exploit divisions to maintain their positions and interests. He pointed out that what is regrettable is the continued political veneration among a segment of the population, where leaders become untouchable figures, and some followers are prepared to defend them regardless of the consequences, even at the expense of the nation’s interests and the future of generations.

‎Dr. Bou Said concluded by saying that the most dangerous thing facing Lebanon today is not the difference of opinions, but rather the lack of insight and willingness to review the facts. When evidence and facts are presented, some insist on taking refuge in outdated theories and slogans that serve no purpose other than protecting their leadership positions, while the nation remains the biggest loser.
